Palo Alto breakfast, then the city!

It is a beautiful morning in sunny Palo Alto! The rest of our drive yesterday was increasingly more spectacular, by way of views. We kept trying to find scenic vistas (but getting lost, including taking an exit to a town called Meadow Vista, which in actual fact was NOT a vista of a meadow, but a town with a gas station and some cute homes), but finally found this incredible expanse in Sonoma:

The greens were even more vibrant than this in person, it was hard to capture on film and like an idiot I didn't take my nice camera out for it. This is, in fact, NOT Bliss of Windows acclaim, though it certainly looks pretty close, no? Especially considering ours wasn't doctored at all!

The Bliss photo was taken nearby, but apparently we lucked out stumbling across the field that we did, because Bliss now actually looks like this:

So I think we won out.

We arrived at about 7pm last night and settled into Kristine's parents' house, which is AMAZING. Kristine met us there and oriented us to our digs, and then we three went to get sushi at Fuki Sushi. The rolls were FANTASTIC, pretty traditional and super delicious. Sadly I was so excited to catch up with Kristine that I forgot photos, but let me remedy that with breakfast:

We're enjoying eggs of various styles and SOURDOUGH BREAD (ahmagad) at Crepevine.

Next on the agenda is the De Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences, and Ben & Jerry's in Haite Ashbury.

Donner Pass

We're heading over the mountains! We're at the top of the world!! Whee!

Reno

We arrived safely in Reno last night, shortly after 7, and the clouds were incredible as we came out of a canyon into the city! Pictures will follow, because we are using several different picture-taking devices on this trip (my phone, my DSLR, my Polaroid, Andrew's phone) so I'm still working on compiling things. There were some fantastic lenticular formations, though, they looked like space ships!

Edit: Photos compiled, so let's add these babies in!

Reno seems to be a place where color TV and telephones are held sacred...

Our first real experience at the casino were these elevator buttons, which were either intended for toddlers or for very drunk people.

Andrew and I are going off our low carb diet this week, so the first order of business was the casino buffet (charmingly named 'Flavors' with sort of an 80's-interpretation-of-a-50's-gameshow style decor). Because you can't really have a casino experience without the gratuitous casino buffet. I am happy to report that it wasn't half bad! Sadly no photos of the food made it out of the experience, I'm sure we're all disappointed.

Then it was gambling time! We putzed around the slots for a bit, and then went to Circus Circus in search of cheap blackjack tables. Andrew and I have never played blackjack together before, and it's been a while since I played at the tables. We lucked out with a really nice table that we parked ourselves at all night, and stayed until well after midnight. The best part was that for every Ace/Face card blackjack you got, you also were given a hilarious little stuffed animal. By the end of the night Andrew and I had a nice little menagerie of stuffed seals and whales. We pretty much broke even, and went back to the room to collapse into bed and fall asleep.

Andrew got me a Polaroid 300 for Valentines, so I'm also creating a Polaroid collection of our trip, though to be totally honest it's hard to remember to take pictures with every device! This is hubris on my part, thinking I'm on top of all of it!

Now we're driving off to San Francisco to meet up with Kristine. Hello 4 more hours of driving!

Side note: We just passed a Taco Bell/Smoke Shop. Now THAT is business acumen!

6 hours of driving.

My Blackjack cheat sheet:

A cool car we passed:

Also, these are Andrew's cows:

On our way to San Fran!

I know you're not supposed to call it San Fran, but I'm going to give it a pass for now (can I even do that?) We're about five hours into our drive and have been singing a wide range of music (Ex. Little Drop of Rain followed by Sail), and listening to Stuff You Should Know podcasts and A Dance With Dragons on tape. We have learned some things, such as how Elko Nevada will never be a destination in and of itself and that mountains in Nevada come in broad variety.

We're about 150 miles from Reno, so we carry onward!

Edit:

On the way out, we saw the Tree of Life!

Also the amazingly reflective Great Salt Lake:

Seatbelts-- how do you think they feel?

Not only did the pups get their teeth cleaned, but they also got...seatbelts! You can see the pain of immense loss in Lucy's eyes as she mourns the ability to run around a moving car unleashed, but you can't see (or hear) them being thrown off their seats when we turn...because it isn't happening! Mwaha!

Some updates!

M. C. Raurus the Truckasaurus loves Jack's painting, all hung up!

And Andrew and I celebrated New Years in style, as you can see...

But the biggest New Years accomplishment was finishing this puzzle:

Because we are so cool. I can proudly say I contributed THREE WHOLE PIECES. And for someone who loses no love between jigsaw puzzles and herself, that's a big deal.

The best thing I have to add are some videos of Lucy wearing her snow boots, which left me in stitches for longer than I care to admit, but I can't figure out how to load them from my phone, so I'll do it tomorrow from my computer.

In other news, I cut up rats and skinned quail this morning, and really that's an accomplishment in and of itself, isn't it?

We are cleaning out old clothes that don't fit anymore. It's an exciting experience. (Andrew would kill me if he knew I posted this)

Backyard Shenanigans, a set on Flickr.
Some days, you just have to take half a mental health day. I shot out of work a couple of hours early, came home and stalked the dogs around the backyard... they were crazy adorable as always. I also caught a small murder aloft as the sun was setting.

We had a GREAT weekend with Sue, Will and Amanda in town! Sadly I worked a lot, but thankfully still got to see everybody. Friday night we went to a new restaurant at Gateway Mall, after attempting two restaurants beforehand that had outrageous waits. But, we were lured in by the posted menu and free dessert/appetizer card (really, it was their initiative that inspired us, I think--while we were standing outside reading the menu, their host came out and handed us the free app/dessert card and invited us in, WHAT SERVICE), and all ended quite well I should say. The food was pretty dang delicious, and we got to sit and talk for a good long while.

Saturday I worked, Andrew got breakfast with the fam, and by the time I got home I ended up going to bed early. Sunday was linner up in Layton with the Cooks and Arndts, with some great food, lots of catching up, and a vintage dress fashion show (one cannot simply lay a 50's dress in front of me and expect that I am not going to put it on, I don't care how embarrassing it could be). Monday featured a breakfast before Amanda, Sue, and Will took off home, and then I went in to work (eek).

Oh, also, Andrew installed deadbolts! Which I already posted a picture of. Neither the front nor back door of our apartment had deadbolts, just door knob locks, and Andrew secured our home by installing them himself. Now we're not going to get robbed! Yaaay! (or at least it will be much harder to rob us, for various reasons).

Andrew has just finished making an incredible dinner, so this ends here... I'm just going to admit, we may or may not be watching WWE Raw right now. I am... fascinated, like watching a train slowly crash.

Andrew being manly and saving our household by installing dead bolts!

How does one go through two full weekend days and wind up feeling like basically nothing got accomplished? It snowed all weekend, and I stayed inside basically the entire time. Obviously there is some link between accomplishment and self-discipline...hhhhmmmmm...

I will experiencing forced accomplishment tomorrow morning, when I unbury my car from about 2' of snow! So that's something!

The past few weeks have flown by, but it's difficult to pinpoint what has made them go so fast. Andrew has started classes and work is starting to pick up. We had some absurd frozen rain on Thursday that turned all smooth, cool surfaces into ice skating ponds. My car had an absurd layer of ice across it (I think I posted a picture of that), and trying to get around the Aviary was like walking around on ice barefoot even though I had work boots with amazing traction on. Much slipping and sliding was had. Then this morning I woke up and found our house swaddled in a thick layer of fog. WHAT IS THIS? WHERE ARE WE LIVING?!

I decided to walk to work this morning. Something about the fog, and the quiet that it created, seemed very inviting. I am about a seven minute drive or 15 minute walk from work, and those eight extra minutes seem like an eternity sometimes, thus a car is taken! It was entirely worth walking, though. I'm going to try to make it a more regular thing, but this morning was special. It was very, very still. I couldn't hear cars driving by before they were 50 feet away. I walked past Liberty Park Lake, which was mainly frozen over and through the fog found a spot where the water was unfrozen and it was a mallard duck heyday.

It made me think, though--when we talk about weather, it is seen as the most inane of small talk. As I was walking I found myself small talking with myself. What strange weather. Warmer than it's been all week. Better than the terrible inversions we've been having. But recently I have been reading more environmental education literature to beef up my resources, and I can't help but think that there is something to weather small talk. Something about connecting with a single, guaranteed experience between people. Something about connecting to our surrounding landscapes and finding an unavoidable (if sometimes irritating) connection. I haven't quite worked it all out just yet, but it's developing slowly.

Andrew and I have been doing keto since the end of November. Just after Thanksgiving Andrew started, and I quickly followed. We have eaten a LOT of steaks, heavy whipping cream, eggs, sausages, cauliflower, cheese, raspberries, 80% dark chocolate, almonds, and coke zero. I am incredibly proud of us during this whole process, however. Neither Andrew or I has 'cheated' (eaten any sugar, flour, rice, or 'carb'y foods) this entire time. Holidays were especially challenging, surrounded by our favorite candies and cookies and homemade cooking, but we're nearly to February and are still going strong. Tonight we had low carb chicken curry (made with heavy whipping cream and riced cauliflower, among other ingredients that actually make a meal curry), and it was incredible. We're feeling a bit extravagant, so I'm going to eat some more parrano cheese and Andrew is cooking bacon.

BUT the point of that is that I am down 10 lbs, and Andrew is down about 35 lbs. I think it's made a big difference for us, and we're feeling pretty awesome. I look forward to the next couple of months.
Ducks on a steaming pond.
I decided to walk to school this morning, in an incredible fog.
1/8th inch glaze of ice over my entire car this past Thursday!

We've been busy!

We have a small apartment, and finding a place for a table to eat at has been difficult. Thankfully Andrew is brilliant! Now we have a place to eat that doesn't involve sitting on the couch!

Headed home

We had a fabulous extended weekend in Grand Junction, and now it's time to head home. We have a Captain, Commander and Lieutenant Commander, so we're set.

Random pictures round up!

I knit a scarf for my younger sister Rae for Christmas, and it turned out to be a really long project, but I was really proud of the results! I feel like it would have benefitted being about 1/3 longer than it was, but for once a scarf I made didn't suffer from being unwearably short!

I had a knee surgery that went very well!

I knit another scarf, this time for Lou, my first eternity scarf.

My dogs were concerned while I was recovering, and were my constant companions.

Had Christmas at my parents' house, Andrew bought me a beautiful dress for Christmas!

Had Second Christmas (like Second Breakfast but better) at the Waterhouse's, Lucy loved Jack!

Lots of playing in the snow...which means getting snow boots on!

This has been such a lovely holiday.
