Should be asleep

I should be in bed right now because I have to get up early for my annual review at work, BUT I am just so excited that I wanted to do a brief post to share a fun little DIY project I just started.

Indie makeup is makeup made by small companies, usually one or two DIY cosmetic enthusiasts who hopped the fence from hobby to profession. I've been getting 'into' this sort of makeup a bit recently, and as I was browsing I couldn't help but wonder why I shouldn't give it a try, considering that I can knit socks, make brownies from scratch, create artwork for interpretive signage at an AZA institution... why not makeup?

All that leads to this:

My first five! A matte dark grey, a green with blue and gold sparkles, a peachy cream with strong yellow undertones, a reddish copper with some green shimmer, and a slightly grey-taupe toned lavender with some light pink shimmer.

Left eye using three-- the cream, the green, and the gray, which looks sort of blue-ish here, but that's just because of the white balance affect from our yellow indoor lighting.

So, voila, my first eyeshadows! I've spent the past week or so researching what I really would need to do to successfully make loose mineral shadows, and after a lot of reading ordered my supplies. Said supplies arrived today, and I could hardly wait to give it a try! It's pretty easy, but I need to perfect my 'base', which is the non-colored ingredients of the eyeshadow that allows the shadow to stick to your eyes and show the true color of the pigment on top of your skin. Bla bla bla, more information than was really necessary, but I'm pretty proud of my first set of shadows, and am excited to make more :)

Still waiting

We're still waiting for any news on the vet school front. It might be as late as June before we hear anything back, depending on when the admissions council/board/what have you convenes to discuss the alternates. No clue right now how many alternate positions actually opened up... but fingers are crossed!

I also want to have a small, personal brag for a moment-- I started to work for Jimmie, a friend and financial advisor, when I was 17 and in college. When I started working for him, he set up a Roth IRA for me that I have been contributing to monthly ever since. I went in for my annual review of my Roth today and I am pleased to say that right now I have about $16k of retirement savings! Hooray future financial security, considering SS might not be around when I get to be that age! Hooray fiscal responsibility!

Our wonderful bird feeders have been overrun with starlings this past week. I appreciate them as a species, but I loathe them as a feeder visitor. They are fascinating to watch, but such BULLIES. They push all the food they don't like to eat out onto the grass, go through an entire house feeder in a day (I know they aren't eating all of it), and chase away the birds we want to watch. As a result, our feeders have been mostly quiet, with the exception of the wandering gangs of vagabond starlings that show up and make me want to yell out my windows like a crazy person. Still working on figuring out how to stop them.

That's it for now :)
